The Atkins diet is high in protein and fiber, packed with vitamins and minerals, has no added sugars or trans fats, and, of course, watches the carbs.
How the Atkins Diet Works
By heavily cutting back on carbohydrates, such as bread, rice and potatoes, the body has to change its preferred energy source to fat and protein. For this reason, the Atkins diet is a popular weight-loss approach.
Benefits of the Aktins Diet
Your body will burn fat instead of carbs meaning you can eat all the protein and fat you would like and still lose weight. The permitted foods list is aplenty so you won't get bored with this diet. And with permission to eat whatever meat you would like, you probably won't get hungry.
Review of The Atkins Diet
In the first phase, the Atkins diet limits carbs to roughly 20 to 90 grams daily, an extremely low quantity according to dietician Barker Jackman. She says the recommended carb intake is 130 grams, and people shouldn't drop below that level.
"This is plain not healthy," says Barker Jackman.
In the second phase, the Atkins diet is little less restrictive on carbs, but still too low, she says. This low-carb diet's main flaw is that burning protein isn't efficient. The process of ketosis, when you burn protein of energy, can leave the dieter with bad breath and feeling lethargic.
"Carbs are the main source of energy," she says. "When the brain doesn't get glucose you become stunned."
Atkins went bankrupt in 2005.
