You don't want to look like you're trying to upstage the bride, but you still want to look your absolute best - so what's a girl to wear as a guest to a wedding? Find out what to wear to as a guest at Ultraformal, Formal, Semi-Formal and Casual Weddings.

In order to decipher wedding invite code you have to analyze both the card itself and the language it's written in.

Ultraformal or Formal Wedding Attire

If you've received an engraved invitation on a heavy card stock that's written in high diction, you know you're in store for an Ultraformal or Formal Wedding. This means tuxes for the men and long gowns for the ladies if it's a white tie event (don't worry, you'll know), or suits and fancy frocks if it's not.

Semiformal Wedding Attire

If you've received a handwritten note, expect a semiformal event and suit up accordingly in a shorter, season-appropriate cocktail or afternoon dress, and dress your date in a dark, conservative business suit.

Casual Wedding Attire

Heard about the wedding casually straight from the two lucky lovebirds? You're in for a casual wedding. If you're a dress girl, stick with a little cocktail number and tone down the accessories. If you're not, pair gauchos with funky wedges, and throw on a fitted blazer and chunky jewelry for an adorably put-together casual look. Let your date swap his suit for khakis, lose the tie, unbutton a button or two, and add a relaxed blazer with a hint of safari or a dash of academia.

Not Sure What Kind of Wedding You'll Be Attending?

If you're staring at a masterly crafted, multi-layer La Sagrada Familia of an invitation, with, "We're finally gettin' hitched!" in romantically - if not overly - swirly letters, and have no idea what to expect, grab your favorite dress and your fancy pumps and just go for it. Sure, there are all these rules, but in that black number (yes, you can wear black), how could you go wrong?
